This page is for ghd owners whose Platinum+, Gold, Original, Chronos or Mini styler, or a Curve tool, is flashing, beeping or not heating. The exact lights and sounds differ between models and generations, so we explain the general pattern, the normal signals that are not a problem, the checks you can safely do at home, and when to stop and contact ghd. We do not give repair steps that involve opening the tool. Your model's manual is the final word on what each light means.

Normal signals that are not a fault

ghd stylers run at one fixed temperature, which ghd lists as 365 F (185 C). Many models give a short audible signal, a light change, or both, when they finish heating and are ready to use. Listings quote heat-up times of about 20 seconds for the Chronos and about 25 seconds for most Curve tools.

ghd tools also have an automatic sleep or shut-off mode. The listings describe 30 minutes for the Platinum+ and older Curve tools, 10 minutes for the Chronos styler and 20 minutes for Chronos Curve tools. When a tool goes to sleep it stops heating, which can look like a fault. Switching it off and on again wakes it.

Why a ghd flashes red or keeps beeping

When a ghd detects a problem it cannot correct, such as a temperature reading it does not expect, it stops heating and signals the fault. Common triggers include an internal sensor or heater problem, damage to the cord where it enters the handle, and an unstable power supply. Some owners also find the signal after a drop or after moisture gets into the tool.

Voltage matters too. ghd stylers list universal voltage, but plugging into a faulty outlet, a worn travel adapter or an overloaded power strip can still cause odd behavior. Counterfeit ghd stylers are widely sold online, and they may not behave like the real tool. If you bought from an unofficial seller, check authenticity with ghd.

What to check first

Work through these in order. They are the cheapest and most likely fixes, and none of them require opening the tool.

  1. 1

Unplug the styler and let it cool completely on a heat-safe surface.

  2. 2

Plug into a different wall outlet, not a power strip. In a bathroom, check that a GFCI outlet has not tripped and press reset if needed.

  3. 3

Look along the cord, especially where it enters the handle and at the swivel. Stop using the tool if you see cuts, kinks, scorching or exposed wire.

  4. 4

Switch on once and wait the full heat-up time.

  5. 5

If it flashes or beeps again in the same way, stop and do not keep power cycling it.

  6. 6

Find your proof of purchase and model details, then contact ghd or the retailer.

Note.Never open a ghd or any hot tool to repair it yourself. A damaged cord or a tool that smells of burning should be unplugged and not used again until checked.

Warranty and repair

The ghd listings we reference mention a 2-year manufacturer warranty on several models, including the Mini Styler and the Curve and Chronos Curve tools. Warranty terms vary by region and by where you bought the tool, so keep your receipt and buy from an authorized seller. ghd's customer service can tell you whether a repair or replacement is possible.

If your ghd is out of warranty and repairs are not offered, it may be time to compare replacements. Our ghd flat iron guide covers the Platinum+, Gold, Chronos and Max, and ghd Chronos vs Platinum+ explains the differences between the two most common models. If your ghd simply will not heat

A ghd that shows no light at all is usually not getting power. A ghd that lights up but stays cool may be asleep or faulty. The broader checklist in flat iron not heating up covers outlets, cords and auto shut-off in more detail and applies to most brands. For curling tools, see how to use a ghd Curve wand for the normal heat-up and sleep timings.

If you are weighing a new ghd against other brands, is ghd worth it explains what the fixed temperature does and does not give you, and the best flat irons list includes adjustable-heat options.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ghd Platinum+ flashing red? Continuous flashing usually signals that the styler has detected a fault and stopped heating. Unplug it, try a different outlet, check the cord, and restart once. If it flashes again, contact ghd with your proof of purchase.

Why does my ghd beep when I turn it on? Many ghd models give a short sound when they reach their 365 F (185 C) styling temperature. That is a ready signal, not a fault.

Can I reset a ghd straightener? Switching off, unplugging and letting it cool is the usual reset. There is no user repair for internal faults, so if the signal returns, contact ghd.

Why did my ghd turn off by itself? ghd tools have an automatic sleep mode, listed at between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the model. Switch it off and on to wake it.
