Flexing plates, as on the Dyson Corrale, are made of thin alloy strips that bend to gather the hair, so the maker says less of it slips out at the edges. The Corrale works corded or on its battery.

Air straighteners such as the Dyson Airstrait and ghd Duet Style push hot air through the hair while it is held between two arms, so they can be used on wet or damp hair, which plate irons are not made for.

These tools cost more than most plate irons and are heavier. Battery run time, weight and the temperature settings are the facts to compare; the guides list what each maker states.

Common mistakes

  • Using a plate flat iron on wet hair because an air straightener can do it.
  • Expecting a cordless tool to last a long session on one charge without checking the stated run time.
