This guide is for anyone choosing a curling iron or wand and wondering which barrel size to get. It lists common barrel diameters from 3/8 to 2 inches with their metric sizes, describes the curl each one makes, and explains how hair length changes the result. It also covers tapered and oval wands and multi-barrel kits, with examples from current ghd, T3 and Bio Ionic listings. Use the barrel size picker for a quick answer based on your length and the look you want.

Curling iron sizes chart

Barrel sizes are measured across the diameter of the barrel. Metric sizes are rounded from 1 inch = 25.4 mm.

How hair length changes the result

Hair has to wrap around the barrel about two times or more to form a curl. That is why the same barrel gives different results on different lengths. A 1 1/4 inch barrel gives a loose curl on long hair but only a soft bend on chin length hair.

As a working rule, short hair at chin length or above does best with 1/2 to 1 inch barrels. Medium hair from chin to shoulders can go up to about 1 1/4 inches. Long hair past the shoulders can use any size up to 2 inches. Long hair on a small barrel gives a tighter, springier result than the same barrel on medium hair, because there are more wraps.

  • Short hair: 1/2 to 1 in
  • Medium hair: 3/4 to 1 1/4 in
  • Long hair: 1 to 2 in, depending on the look

What size curling iron should I get?

If you only buy one, a 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch barrel covers the most looks on most lengths. A 1 inch barrel makes classic curls that relax into waves. A 1 1/4 inch barrel makes looser curls and is a common choice for beach waves on shoulder length and longer hair. Many brands center their lines on these sizes; T3 lists its SinglePass Curl X in 1, 1.25 and 1.5 inch barrels, and ghd lists its Chronos Curve Classic at 1 inch and Chronos Curve Grand at 1.25 inches.

For tight curls or very short hair, look at 1/2 to 3/4 inch, such as the ghd Curve Thin Wand at 0.5 inch. For volume and a smooth bend on long hair, look at 1 1/2 to 2 inches. For long hair, a long barrel helps fit the full length; see best curling irons for long hair.

Wand sizes, tapered and oval barrels

Curling wand sizes follow the same rule, but many wands are not one diameter. A tapered or conical wand is wider at the base and narrower at the tip, so one tool makes both looser and tighter curls; the ghd Curve Creative Curl Wand lists a 0.9 to 1.1 inch taper. Oval barrels, like the ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand at 1 to 1.5 inches, give a slightly flattened wave rather than a round curl.

Interchangeable barrel kits

If you want several sizes without several handles, interchangeable kits swap barrels on one base. The T3 Switch Kit Classic Trio lists 1, 1.25 and 1.5 inch clip barrels, and the Bio Ionic Twist 3-in-1 set includes three swappable ceramic barrels. Kits cost more up front but suit people who change looks often. Compare options in best curling irons and best T3 curling irons, and see 1 inch vs 1 1/4 inch curling iron if you are stuck between the two most popular sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What size curling iron is best for beginners? A 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch barrel is the easiest place to start for most lengths. Both make curls that brush out into waves.

What size curling iron for beach waves? Usually 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches on shoulder length and longer hair, or a wave or oval wand. Short hair does better with a 1 inch barrel.

Does a bigger barrel mean bigger curls? Yes, as long as your hair is long enough to wrap around it about two times. On short hair a big barrel may only give a bend.

What is 32 mm in curling iron size? About 1 1/4 inches. 25 mm is about 1 inch and 38 mm is about 1 1/2 inches.
