This page is for anyone shopping for a first curling tool or confused by the terms wand, iron and tong. We explain what makes a wand different, why it comes with a glove, the main barrel shapes, how results differ from a clamp iron, and who each tool suits. Examples come from current ghd, T3 and Bio Ionic listings. If you already own a wand, how to use a curling wand covers the technique step by step.

How a curling wand works

A wand is a heated barrel on a handle, with a cool tip at the end. There is no clamp or lever. You take a section of hair, wrap it around the barrel by hand, hold briefly while the hair heats, then slide the wand out so the curl drops. Because nothing pinches the ends, there is no clamp crease, and it is easy to leave the ends out for a wave.

Most wands come with a heat-resistant glove. You wear it on the hand that holds and wraps the hair, because your fingers come close to the hot barrel. Several ghd listings, such as the Chronos Curve Max Wand, mention a styling glove included, and the Max Wand listing states plainly that it is a wand and does not have a clamp.

Curling wand vs curling iron vs tong

A curling iron and a tong are the same thing in most usage: a barrel with a spring-loaded clamp. Tong is the more common word in the UK and in ghd's naming. A wand has no clamp. The table sums up the differences.

Types of curling wand

Wands come in a few shapes. The shape changes the curl as much as the size does.

  • Straight wand: one diameter along the barrel, for uniform curls. Example: the ghd Chronos Curve Max Wand at 1.5 in.
  • Tapered or conical wand: wider at the base, narrower at the tip, so one wand makes a mix of looser and tighter curls. Example: the ghd Curve Creative Curl Wand at 0.9 to 1.1 in.
  • Oval wand: a flattened barrel that gives a looser, wave-like bend. Example: the ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand at 1 to 1.5 in.
  • Thin wand: a small barrel for tight curls and texture. Example: the ghd Curve Thin Wand at 0.5 in.
  • Interchangeable sets: one handle with swappable barrels, which can include wand and clamp barrels. Example: the Bio Ionic Twist 3-in-1 set.

Who a wand suits

A wand suits people who want soft, lived-in curls and beach waves, people who dislike clamp marks, and anyone with long hair who wants to wrap big sections quickly. It also suits people who like to vary direction and size from section to section.

A clamp iron may suit you better if you are new to heat styling, if you want polished, uniform curls, or if you find holding hair against a hot barrel awkward. Some tools blur the line: the T3 SinglePass Curl X listings describe it as a curling iron and curling wand in one, used with or without the clip. For beach wave technique, read how to get beach waves with a curling wand.

Choosing a wand size and heat

Barrel size works the same way as on a curling iron: smaller barrels make tighter curls and hair should wrap around about two times. A 1 to 1 1/4 inch wand is a common first choice. See the curling iron size guide or the barrel size picker.

For heat, start at the low end of the typical range for your hair type if your wand has a dial. ghd lists its Curve wands at a fixed 365 F (185 C). Our curling iron temperature guide lists typical bands, and the best curling wands and best ghd curling wands guides compare current models.

Note. The whole barrel of a wand gets hot except the cool tip. Wear the glove, keep the barrel away from your scalp and skin, and rest the wand on its stand.

Frequently asked questions

Is a curling wand the same as a curling iron? No. A wand has no clamp and you wrap hair by hand. A curling iron has a clamp that holds the ends.

Do you need a glove for a curling wand? It is strongly recommended because your fingers are close to the hot barrel. Most wands include a heat-resistant glove.

What is the difference between a wand and a tong? A tong is another word for a clamp curling iron, common in the UK and in ghd's names. A wand has no clamp.

Is a curling wand easier than a curling iron? Many people find a clamp iron easier at first. Wands take a little practice but make soft waves and avoid clamp creases.
