This page answers a common question: can you skip the blow dry and go straight to the flat iron? It explains what happens when hot plates meet wet or damp hair, what makers say, what wet to dry tools do differently, and how to get to dry, straight hair efficiently. It also covers damp hair at the roots and nape, which is the most common hidden cause of frizz after straightening.

What makers say about plate irons and wet hair

Manufacturers of standard flat irons, including ghd, BaBylissPRO, T3 and Dyson for the Corrale, design their irons for dry hair, and manuals generally tell you not to use them on wet hair. A plate iron is made to smooth and set hair that is already dry, not to dry it.

This is why tool makers created a separate category of wet to dry straighteners that use air. Their existence is a good signal that plate irons are not meant for the job.

What happens when hot plates meet wet hair

Water between two hot plates turns to steam quickly. You often hear a sizzle and see steam. The hair dries in an uneven way: the outside of the section can feel dry while the inside stays damp, so it frizzes or reverts to its natural pattern soon after. Most people find the result worse than if they had blow dried first.

Many stylists also caution that rapid steam inside wet hair under high heat is hard on the hair, which is one more reason makers advise against it. Damp product on the hair can also bake onto the plates and build up residue.

Note.Do not use any electrical hot tool with wet hands or near water. Unplug it when you are done.

Wet to dry straighteners

Wet to dry tools use heated airflow rather than hot plates to dry hair and straighten it at the same time.

They trade some things for that convenience. Air straighteners are larger and cost more than most plate irons, and the finish can look different from a plate iron on very curly or coarse hair, so some people still do a quick plate pass on dry hair afterward. They also move a lot of air, so filters and intakes need regular cleaning; see Dyson Airstrait errors and reset. Whether the time saved is worth it depends on how long your blow dry takes now.

Dyson Airstrait and ghd Duet Style

The Dyson Airstrait is sold as a wet to dry hair straightener. Dyson says it uses high-pressure airflow projected through the hair as you style to dry and straighten at the same time, and that it senses when hair is between the arms and drops to low airflow when it is not. See how to use the Dyson Airstrait and is the Dyson Airstrait worth it.

The ghd Duet Style is a 2-in-1 hot air styler. Its listing describes air-fusion technology that dries and straightens hair at the same time, plus a Shine Shot mode for dry hair only that works as a styler at 365°F with no air. Dyson Airstrait vs ghd Duet Style compares them, and our hair straightener guide lists both.

How to get from wet to straight with a plate iron

If you have a standard iron, the fastest path to sleek hair is a good blow dry, then the iron.

  1. 1

Towel blot gently, then apply a heat protectant.

  2. 2

Rough dry until most of the water is gone.

  3. 3

Blow dry in sections with a paddle or round brush, pulling hair smooth.

  4. 4

Check the roots and nape with your fingers. They must be fully dry.

  5. 5

Flat iron thin sections with one slow pass at the low end of your typical range. See the temperature guide.

  6. 6

    Let hair cool before brushing.

The hidden problem: damp roots and nape

Even people who would never iron soaking wet hair often iron hair that is slightly damp underneath. The nape, the area behind the ears and thick inner layers dry last. When the iron hits these areas you get steam, frizz and waves that come back quickly. If your hair will not stay straight, this is the first thing to check; see hair won't stay straight after a flat iron.

Frequently asked questions

Can you straighten damp hair? Not with a plate iron. Makers design plate irons for dry hair. Dry it fully first, or use a wet to dry air straightener.

What is a wet to dry flat iron? Usually a tool that uses heated air, not hot plates alone, to dry and straighten at the same time, such as the Dyson Airstrait or ghd Duet Style.

Why does my flat iron sizzle? Water or wet product is turning to steam on the plates. Make sure hair and products are fully dry.

Can I use the Dyson Corrale on wet hair? No. It is a plate straightener for dry hair. Dyson's wet to dry tool is the Airstrait.
